@Cash-Rewards I'd like to echo some of the sentiments shared by our fellow members here. First, TJs are old, JKs aren't...yet. Heh. Second, I sought out a 2012 specifically to avoid the "minivan 3.8." As you probably saw in another of my recent threads, I'm going through an evaluative process on my 3.6. Other than that, it offers good power, just not at an RPM range most classic Jeep guys are used to, and decent fuel economy, all things considered. That said, for the 4 years I've owned my JKU, it's never left me stranded or given me any reliability issues. However, with my tendency towards prophylactic maintenance, I could probably make a British or Italian vehicle reliable.
On some of the other aspects, well, fitment and ergonomics is very subjective. I've changed the spring in my pedal assembly (OE is too stiff), I've changed out the 2012 park bench front seat for a 2014, which sorta helps, installed a better sound system (no amp, geez), and other quality of life things like a dead pedal. Even still, I find the brake pedal annoyingly high, which apparently is due to "offroad things." Although I've improved it greatly, my opinion is that the JK is a bit of an ergonomic mess. If you're a weird shape like me or are sensitive to things like that, take a good long test drive and be critical. On the upside, suspension work and most mechanical stuff, most work in general, is exceedingly easy.
Drive-wise, I've never had an issue with it. I appreciate the feedback provided by a draglink SFA hydraulic steering setup. Once you get it dialed in or replace any sub-par components it's not bad at all. Ride is very much what you make it. When I bought mine, the ride was like being on top of a bowl of jello on a rollerskate. After addressing the issues that weren't (a whole slew of word soup, I'll spare you) by the previous Rough Country 3.25" lift, it drove pretty darn nicely for what it is. It actually even handles decently too. So that's very much a case where you're buying the previous owner.
I'll briefly address the intangibles. Aside from the mix of negatives and sorta-positives above, I liken my ownership with my JKU to a very emotionally charged relationship. When everything is just right, the top is down or the doors are off, the weather is beautiful, the traffic is just so, or you're in the right state of mind, there's nothing like it. It's almost therapeutic to drive. The rest of the time, you're tolerating or accepting the shortcomings that are part of the rest of the package, either because you have to or you're looking for your next high. So, if you can accept compromise in the relationship in your DD, it's hard to beat. It's the weirdest thing for me. Sometimes, I'll have gotten the seat just right and then it feels completely different on my way to work, and I fiddle with it. Then I get in to go home and then it feels off and I mess with it again. It's almost as though it'd dependent on the condition of your body (stiff, loose, sore, good). Anyway, that's neither here nor there, but you get the idea.
Hope that helps!
