If you are in Seattle, like me, gasoline is expensive and electricity is cheap. That can shift the balance. Elsewhere, those costs may be flipped making an ICE vehicle more cost effective.
I've crunched a few numbers and the cost of charging at home is anywhere from 1/8 to 1/3 the cost of gasoline (ignoring all other environmental factors), so yeah -- it does vary a lot.
We're in the "1/3" camp, so I'd have to drive quite a bit to make it really worthwhile, in addition to a couple thousand dollars of home electrical upgrades.
I think this lack of a one-size-fits-all decision tree for EVs is precisely why if people need a simple answer, hybrids or PHEVs are the winner (as you basically said)
People in general suck at decisions, and they're not very logical, so most of this type of thinking is just academic for people like Oppos. I like finance and cars, so this stuff is very much in my wheelhouse...other people fall asleep after 30 seconds 🙂
